Gladys’ Café in St. Thomas is a cozy little gem tucked away in one of the narrow alleys off Main Street, housed in an antique brick warehouse in downtown Charlotte Amalie. It’s the kind of place you might walk past if you’re not looking for it—but once inside, it feels instantly warm and inviting.
The menu offers a wonderful mix of traditional Caribbean dishes alongside familiar American favorites, making it accessible while still deeply rooted in island flavors. On this visit, we ordered the curry goat, which was exceptionally tender and well seasoned. The rice was cooked with beans and a subtle hint of tomato, and the plate was completed with cabbage, carrots, and sweet plantain—a satisfying and comforting combination.
Other crowd favorites lived up to their reputation. The oxtails were outstanding—rich, tender, and full of flavor—while the jerk wings (six pieces) delivered a great kick of spice. What stood out most was how well the chicken was marinated, ensuring the flavor went all the way through rather than relying solely on the sauce.
The atmosphere adds to the charm. Lighting is a bit dim, but it only enhances the homey, wine-cellar-like vibe, with exposed brick masonry and paintings lining the walls. Despite arriving close to closing time, service was quick, friendly, and welcoming, and the restaurant never made you feel rushed. They also offer a full bar, rounding out the experience nicely.
This was our second visit, the first having been several years ago, and Gladys’ Café was just as enjoyable this time as it was then—a true testament to its consistency.
Overall
Gladys’ Café is a terrific spot for lunch in St. Thomas, combining authentic Caribbean flavors, a cozy atmosphere, and genuinely warm hospitality. It’s a place we would happily return to again and again—and one we definitely recommend.
